Art, for many contemporary abstract artists, is more than just a passion—it’s a necessity. It’s an emotional release, a process of exploration, and an essential form of self-expression. But when life’s obligations take over—family responsibilities, professional demands, financial worries—the once-free creative flow can become frustratingly stagnant. The absence of dedicated time to paint doesn’t just slow down an artist’s progress; it can erode confidence, disrupt inspiration, and create a cycle of artistic neglect that’s difficult to escape.
I experienced this first-hand while serving as the First Vice President and acting President of the Art Council of Southwest Florida. I have always strived to be that artist who lifts others along the way and provides them with opportunities they may not have had without outside assistance and/or encouragement. I have never been great at saying no, often taking on more responsibility until I barely had time to devote to my artistic goals.
However, quitting was never an option for me, so I devoted myself to the nonprofit agenda until my term was completed. I joyfully turned the reins of our organization over to a new executive board last month, and finally, I had the time needed to devote to my artistic passion and focus on my gallery and studio.
Honestly, I was a bit nervous; did I still have the skills to succeed? I always believed that you don't know until you start moving forward. So, I picked up my brush. I stood before the big, white blank canvas, swallowed hard, and started applying the first layer of paint. What I discovered is I could still paint, but it was a bit different. My palette of colors was a bit different, and the feelings of my paintings were a bit more peaceful than before. It felt as though I was being told, "You did what you needed to do for others; now we are here to help you."
I'm not promising that my wild colors will never return, but they will return on my terms now, when I am ready to be bold and vibrant. For now, I am enjoying the peaceful and calm feeling that comes from doing the right thing, for the right reasons, at the right time. I hope you enjoy the new works that will be added to my website in the next couple of days. Join my email list to be one of the first to see them!
